Cinematic instrumentation, evocative themes, and a touch of mystery carry Phantoms of Reality across an Americana landscape—from Blue Ridgebyways to the Texas Panhandle to the Land of Enchantment. Phantoms of Reality is Brother and The Hayes’ fifth studio project. The six-song EP was recorded in Nashville, TN, and produced by bandleaders and siblings David Bingaman and Jennie Hayes Kurtz alongside Diana Walsh, who also engineered and mixed the project. For the first time, Bingaman and Kurtz brought their road band into the studio, resulting in something very special. Nick Davidson played all the percussion, while Andrew Thomas played primary pedal steel guitar, along with acoustic guitar, keys, and numerous backing vocals. The EP finds Brother and The Hayes leaning into their signature plainspoken, emotionally resonant songwriting and authentic roots musicality, while drawing sonic inspiration from the 1960s Nashville Sound, the southwestern musical traditions of their native Texas, and maybe a little surf rock.
